Program OverviewFrom distant rainforests to neighbourhood street trees, forests proe tremendous benefits to urban areas such as clean air and water, climate resilience and biodiversity, human health, and well-being. Forests also proe jobs, recreation, and a suite of nature-based solutions for city infrastructure. Cities4Forests helps cities from around the world connect with and invest in inner forests (such as city trees and urban parks), nearby forests (such as green corors and watersheds) and faraway forests (such as tropical and boreal forests). We encourage our cities to better conserve, manage, and restore these forests. And we proe technical assistance to align local policy, shared knowledge, peer-to-peer learning, andmunication activities to help cities take climate action together. Urban forest proes as green infrastructure with careful planning and management, proe benefits from cleaning the air to calming our minds. A key to planning and managing urban forest is first understanding the quantity, quality, and distribution of the resources across the landscape. Currently, WRI Indonesia and Cities4Forests are involved in proing policy support and technical assistance to the city government on the development and management of the city’s greenhouse gas inventory. The data source for the greenhouse gas inventory in the Forest and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector is the land use map developed by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. However, detailed data of GHG emissions should be proed due to the target for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), one of which originates from the AFOLU sector. This sector epasses aspects of urban forests that make a significant contribution to carbon absorption in urban areas."
General Internship RolesThe Urban Forestry Intern will be based in Jakarta and actively involved in data analysis and data collecting for the analysis of carbon sequestration of urban trees. He/she will contribute to calculating greenhouse gas inventory of Jayapura, including data preparation, analysis, and data visualization.
What You Will LearnThe intern will gain experience in the following areas:
- Learning experience in the development and maintenance of databases and spreadsheets to track emissions data over time.
- Learning experience and exposure to various nature-based solutions topics, such as the concept of green, blue, and grey infrastructures.
What You Will Need - A bachelor’s degree (or pendingpletion of a bachelor’s degree) in geography, environmental science, urban planning, forestry, or a related field.
- Familiarity in data collection, organization, and analysis
- Experience or coursework related to GHG emissions, carbon accounting, or environmental data analysis is a plus.
Duration20 September – 19 October 2023 (1 month) with possible extension up to a total period of 6 (six) month subject to project needs and budget availability.
